experience reflection

The challenge is not to create polished, finished solutions but to provoke people to think differently.

The consumer society is triggering the destruction of our planet. The amount of waste generated by the humans is being the main cause of this destruction. People are not aware about how they affect the world pollution with their actions. As an agent for change we have to find the best way to change the behaviors of the people in order to get a healthy world where eco-conscious dominates.

Jeremy and Caroline are the owner couple of the Eco Camping Wales. The campsite is situated in the heart of the stunning Geo Park in the west of the Brecon Beacons National Park (Wales). The foundation of their camping resides on the ecology and the sustainable actions, carrying through a kind of specific life based on the natural human habits avoiding any type of technology.

From a primary and secondary research, we used the design-thinking method to achieve a wide range of ideas in order to start thinking in different potential changes and solutions in a creative and ambitious way.

On that basis, we create ECOmmunity. The main goal of our project is to restructure the campsite providing them a common area where campers could learn and develop eco-friendly behaviors and also promote a community-like environment while doing daily activities. It is addressed to nomad people (walkers and hikers…), groups (schools, families, societies…) and also to non-campers.

During the whole design process the clients gave us feedback in order to improve as much as possible our proposals. The development process was very useful to discover and practice different design methods, such as using paper prototyping and drawings to explain the main idea in one minute. Real size reproduction was also helpful to understand how the idea could work and discover its viability, durability and desirability.

Five values to define our project:

COMMUNITY, RESPECT, INFLUENCING CHANGE, PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT and CHALLENGE.

After weeks of working deeply in Ecommunity project, the ultimate idea was finally presented in front of our clients. They were very interested in our purpose because they find it viable and desirable. The use of recycled pallets as a main material was an interesting solution for them. They hadn’t thought about this option before, and it is actually a cheap and easy way to restructure the campsite. They really agreed in the fact that the communal area could work and they supported our idea. On the other side, they found the idea too much rigid and inelastic to be developed in the real context. So they aimed to develop different areas as we thought but separately in an organic disposition, taking advantage of the land shape. We also benefited them the possibility to get logo templates. Using this method they could reproduce the signage and develop little objects as merchandising, that makes campers remind of their experiences in the campsite after leaving it. We were very proud of our result and of the clients’ feedback.

PRESENTATION

MILESTONE 4. AGENT 4 CHANGE: PRESENTATION TO ECO CAMPING WALES AND THE LTDU SUSTAINABLE CAMPUS LEARNING AND DEVELOPMENT OFFICER

After these weeks of working deeply in our Ecommunity project, finally we present it in front of our clients. They were very interested in our purpose because they find it viable and desirable. The use of recycled pallets as a main material was an interesting solution for them. They didn’t think about this option before and actually, it is a cheap and easy way to restructure the campsite. They really agree in the fact that the communal area could work and they support the idea. They find our idea too much rigid and inelastic to be developed in the real context. So they aimed to develop different areas as we thought but separately in a organic disposition, taking advantage of the land shape. We also benefited them the possibility to get logo templates. Using this method they could reproduce the signage and develop little objects as merchandising, that makes campers remind of their experiences in the campsite after leaving it.  We were very proud of our final result and of the clients feedback.

Developing experiences

The best way to sell our main idea, is reproducing how should it be in the real context. Developing the items with real materials and real sizes, we could be aware about their viability, durability and desirability. Then the project will speak for itself, because we could demonstrate how everything can be produced and become real things.

6 sources of influence

At this step, we have to work in our prototypes thinking accurately and in detail about each design. We also have to think on the effects of our sustainable solutions and assessing if they will be integrated into people daily behaviors.
Based on the previous mentioned video (Change behavior – change the world, Joseph Grenny at TEDXBYU), some themes have been extracted to make us thinking and questioning deeply about our project integration.
DOES YOUR PROPOSAL ‘TASTE’ GOOD? WILL PEOPLE THINK, “THAT’S GOOD, I’M INTERESTED”?
The main point of developing a communal area is the most desirable part of our project. Offering the visitors the chance of living in the wild, while sharing their experiences and their public lives. At the same time they also can have a respected intimacy while staying in their tent area. It is a way to be yourself without taking care of the social image or what the others will think about you, you could forget the social statements and live without any more worry than taking care of the nature.
HOW WOULD YOU LIKE PEOPLE TO RESPOND TO YOUR IDEAS? WHAT’S YOUR IDEAL PLAN?
People should have sustainable behaviors assimilated for themselves, then their actions would respond to our project plan respecting the environment. The ideal plan would be that people could internalise sustainable awarenesses, and through our project we could help them developing their activities in the best context and using as more facilities as possible.
HOW JEREMY AND CAROLINE WANT PEOPLE TO RESPOND TO YOUR IDEAS? WHAT’S THEIR IDEAL PLAN?
Jeremy and Caroline want to continue their sustainable philosophy, so they want campers to fit with the ideas proposed to get a better use of their camp. If people follow the ‘rules’ of the campsite, Jeremy and Caroline will feel pleased also for contributing in changing people behavior.
WHAT MIGHT VISITORS’ IDEAL PLANS BE WHEN THEY ARRIVE?
Visitors should have the chance to set on the site and feel as comfortable and relaxed as possible. We can’t forget that the campsite is a primitive place where you have the challenge to survive surrounded by wildlife. People have to be open-minded and likely to be friendly to develop a common life with the other campers. From here, campers are free to do their activities and spend time taking advantage of the beauty of nature.
HOW DO YOUR IDEAS ENCOURAGE PEOPLE TO THINK ABOUT THEIR BEHAVIOR? HOW MIGHT YOUR IDEAS HELP PEOPLE DECIDE TO BEHAVE SUSTAINABLY?
We provide the campers the chance to play into the wild surrounded by campfire. They can share a card game, walk through the mountains, watch the stars or tell tales with people of all ages. Spending some days in this environment, campers will learn indirectly that their lives don’t depend on technology devices. After this experience, when they will have come back at home, they will have built a new angle of living and will appreciate spending time with other people in the nature, far from the pollution of the city. So they will begin acting consequently with their thoughts remembering those things that they saw on the campsite.
HOW DO YOUR IDEAS HELP PEOPLE LEARN NEW SKILLS AND TEACH THEM THAT SUSTAINABLE BEHAVIOR IS POSSIBLE?
People will learn other ways to live in a sustainable way. They will learn from other campers how to solve some daily problems sharing their experiences and watching others acting. The easier way to teach someone is showing him how to act. The other campers could follow a referent and they will learn efficiently.
HOW ARE YOU TURNING THE WHOLE CAMPSITE INTO A DIFFERENT KIND OF ENVIRONMENT – A PLACE OF GOOD SUSTAINABLE BEHAVIOR?
Creating a friendly and social environment, campers will feel comfortable and ready to get involved in the tasks developed in the campsite. It will be the best chance to take a breath far from tensions, stress and discussions carried out during the daily workers life.

Prototypes

MILESTONE 3. STORY TELLING AND ROLE-PLAY METHODS

How can we sell our idea? We need to present it in to media by using different ways (telling a story, using paper prototyping, creating a branding, using journalist text style…).

In the less time as possible (1 minute) we had to be able to explain the main idea of our project by using drawings and paper prototypes. We also added some human values acting as if we were in the real context. By this method we could understand how could be the users feelings, which could be their desirabilities and also the viability grade of our idea.

5 VALUES TO DEFINE OUR PROJECT.

COMMUNITY – RESPECT – INFLUENCING CHANGE – PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT – CHALLENGE

Concept sketch

MILESTONE 2. Pitch our idea to the client.

After practice our team presentation in front of our classmates, we connect with Caroline and Jeremy via skype to expose them our idea. We was supposed to show our research, both primary and secondary, and to explain how the various insights and inspiration we had gathered had led to he concept proposal for development.
